Your dog tested positive for CDDY. Now what?
You ran a Wisdom Panel or Embark, and there it is: CDDY - two copies. Deep breath. Here's what that result does and doesn't mean.

What CDDY is
CDDY (chondrodystrophy) marks an FGF4 retrogene on chromosome 12 - the same genetics that give dachshunds their long, low silhouette also change how disc cartilage matures and ages (Brown et al. 2017, PNAS). It's the primary genetic driver of Type I disc disease.
A positive test is a reason to get the everyday setup right - calmly, once. Three questions, two minutes, mapped for your dog.
The part the report doesn't say loudly enough
Two copies of CDDY is a breed baseline, not an individual prediction. A negative result wouldn't have been a guarantee either.

Genetics load the gun; lifestyle handles it
Think of it the way doctors use family history: it tells you which odds deserve your attention - not what will happen. IVDD is polygenic and multifactorial; you can't test a puppy and know. What the result should change is your motivation, not your sleep:
- Keep them lean (the #1 modifiable factor in the 43,517-dog JAVMA study).
- Move leash load off the neck; soften the couch-and-bed landing.
- Keep them active and muscled - restriction backfires.
- Learn the early signs cold, and insure before any first symptom.
In other words: a clear plan - now with a reason on paper.
