The IVDD-Ready Home Checklist
Everything the research says you control, turned into a one-afternoon setup. Check things off as you go - most homes finish in a weekend.
The living room
- ☐ A ramp at the couch - the single most-repeated home change among owners. A no-gap deck and a low incline are what make dogs actually use it.
- ☐ Introduce it from day one: treats down the slope, block the shortcut for the first week, reward every use. Gear used early gets used for life.
- ☐ If the bed is a jumping zone too - a second ramp beats carrying (most homes run two).
The stairs
- ☐ Decide your stairs policy once: controlled use is fine - the biggest US study associated regular stair use with lower risk. The concern is jarring, bounding descents.
- ☐ Steep, human-sized steps used daily? Ease the grade (stair wedges).
The walk
- ☐ Retire the collar for leash work - every pull concentrates on the neck. A Y-front harness spreads load across the chest.
- ☐ Check the fit: four adjustment points, no chafe behind the front legs, leash to the front on pullers.
The floors
- ☐ Traction on slippery routes - runners or rugs on hardwood paths they sprint (hall, food bowl, door).
The body (the #1 lever)
- ☐ Ask your vet for a body-condition score - keeping a dachshund lean is the best-evidenced modifiable factor there is (overweight OR 1.67, JAVMA 2025).
- ☐ Keep them moving - walks, sniffing, muscle. Active, well-muscled dachshunds fare better. Don't bubble-wrap the dog.
The paperwork (10 minutes that matter most)
- ☐ Pet insurance BEFORE any first symptom - spinal issues in the record become "pre-existing" forever. If you ever want it, want it now.
- ☐ Save the early-signs list (it's here) - reluctance to jump, hunched back, trembling, yelping when lifted. Early action changes outcomes.
- ☐ Know your nearest 24/7 vet - write it where the family can see it.
That's the whole system - a home that quietly takes the needless load off the long back, and an owner who knows what to watch for.
